MORE ABOUT SECURE CONNECTIONS

How to confirm your payment is secure: Secure payments are made by submitting payment information through a secure payment window (often called a secure form) - your browser window will indicate a secure connection with a lock icon on the bottom right of your screen (Microsoft Internet Explorer) or on the bottom left of your screen (Netscape Navigator). You can also tell a payment window or form is secure by looking at the address line - the internet address should start with https:// instead of the usual http:// - the key difference is the "s" which stands for "secure".

What a secure payment means: When your PC opens a secure window as described above, it takes special action when you submit the payment information over the internet - specifically, it encrypts all the payment information so that it is not readable by anyone on the internet except for the final destination site (in the case of officepools, the Royal Bank). This means that as your payment information travels the internet highway, even if hackers have sophisticated technology to see your data along the way, all they see is an encrypted representation which is useless - it is just a pile of random numbers while encrypted! Only the final secure destination can decrypt the information for proper processing.
